This film's poster tells us that it is a romantic comedy given away by the colours and so fourth. They make the poster very appealling and eye catching with the use of word uncensored unhitited unmarried immediately the audience want to know more
We are introduced to our main protagonist with brigdet jones holding what we would think is her diary. The male protagonist are either side of her both looking in and colin is try to look into the book. The proganist each show the comedy side of the movie with their expressions.
The text is very large and use the typicla romantic text colour ouf red and black which can connote so much love, passion etc they make the movie easy for the audience to straight away tell this is romance movie. The comedy elemnt is portrayed by the use of the phrase such as
all women keep score but only the great one put it in writing.
I think the target audience for this film is 18-40's as they could relate to the storyline more and identify themselves with the characters. Also many women do use diiary so it help the women to relate to Renee zellwegger.
The trailer make bridget seem very real when see talking about her resoultions and the dilemmas in her love life and then the horribly embrassing clip of her singing quite badly helping many women to relate and then want to see the movie.

Notting Hill Notes
Notting Hill Notes
How do mise-en-scene, cinematography, editing and sound create meaning for an audience?
All these aspects help create a sense of escapism and the audience could find the storyline and settings easy to relate to and appeal to them, these elements help the movie seem more realistic to the everyday lives of their audience. The musical soundtrack is a typical romantic song which the audience could establish the genre so early in the movie and create a relationship with the characters as we see them in their everyday lives.
Who are the target audience for this film?
I think the main target audience would be females aged between 18-35 as the movie is based on a romantic storyline. Also the movie may bring in various audience because of the well known actors uses in the movie.
What techniques are specifically used to target the audience?
The British humour and the actors would engage the middle aged audience and the voice over let the audience know about Will's ordinary lifestyle which people of this age could relate to. Also, the location used could do this as well and as they are typically British settings it would attract tourists to want to explore the UK. This is because the movie almost make england seem like the perfect getaway.
What Techniques are used to introduce Anna (Julia Roberts)? How is the audience made to identify with her?
Typical romantic music is used in the movie to help register the genre with the audience we see multiple close-ups of Anna in her celebrity life and we establish that she is a protagonist. Her happy expressions and smiles make us think she is over the moon in her position but this may just be a front. She is portrayed as high class, beautiful and her elegant movements could attract males just as much as females, the audience may wish to have that same lifestyle and be famous as she looks so happy.
What Techniques are used to introduce Will (Hugh Grant)? How is the audience made to identify with him?
The romantic music stops and a voice over of him talking is used telling us the basics of his lifestyle, describing where he lives, a bit about his past marriage and about Anna and her movies. His life is contrasted to Anna's to show how ordinary his life is in Central London, most of the audience could probably relate to this.
What genre signifier's are present in the opening sequence?
The romantic music, slow camera movements, the fades and transitions are elements that help the audience establish the genre right from the start.

Will's voice over describes Notting Hill; the mini stalls, the tattoo parlour, the bad hairdresser all in a ordinary yet almost crazy.

Hugh was casted for this role as he has a lot of experience in successful rom-coms and now associated with this genre movies. Also, as this was a British Working Title film, a well known British male celebrity would appeal to the target audience.

atonement notes
Atonement Notes
How are the characters introduced to us at the start of the film?
Briony is the first character we see therefore automatically believing she is the key protagonist, she is introduced as an inspired writer at the age of 13.Cecilia is then introduced as the older sister of Briony and they seem to have a close relationship. However, Cecilia acts a bit stroppy and in a teenager mood. A strong but elegant individual that doesn't want to show her feelings for Robbie yet it is quite obvious she likes him.Robbie is the gardener and a family friend but is dressed down compared to the family as he is more of a labour worker to them. His relationship is complicated with Cecilia as they have a past that we do not know about yet.
What is suggested about social class and about family?
From the start Social class is a key theme in this movie and is clearly visible; fluent British accents, workers in the house, Victorian style clothing and their huge high-ceiling house suggest they are upper class people. The carefully intricate details shown in each room of the house appear to be very expensive. The family seem to have quite a close relationship as they are all happy and taking part in Brionys play and they all seem very well educated.Their elegant and beautiful clothing help them as posh girls to stand out from the workers who are in downgraded clothes portraying the contrast between the two classes.
What assumptions can you make about the film from the opening few minutes?
A possible assumption that could be made is that the movie would be about the novel the little girl wrote and there may be some sort of conflict between Robbie and Cecilia or even love as they act as if there is sexual tension between the two of them. Briony doesn't like what she mistakenly sees out of her window and possibly she may do something to stop them being in love or she is the one who will be in atonement.
Do you think the period aspect of this adaption helped the box office in any way? Explain your ideas
I think that it didn't as there were many films out at the same time who focused on the war period as there theme and in my opinion I think this movie would appeal most likely to a older ranged audience.
How key would you say these two characters are to the marketing campaign?
Kiera Knightley and James McAvoy are key to the films success as they are massive actors acroos the globe which ave a large fanbase. Having such big actors would attract an audience as possibly a younger audience. Also as they are are both from the UK, the film would do great here aswell as other internationally as they would be interested in the lives of people in the UK especially in the war period.
What do you think is the target audience for similar period dramas?
I think the target audience is more middle aged people, 18-40. As they can understand the period better than those who are much younger . However, the younger generation may be interested in how people used to live around the time of the war and like the romance that undergoes in the movie through stories from older generations.
Investigate the meanings of the title?
what different definitions of this word can you find?- Satisfaction, reparation, or expiation given for an injury or wrong- The reconciliation of man with God through the life, sufferings, and sacrificial death of Christ.
